Why Gjivai Zechiel Would Be a Smart Signing for Arsenal or Chelsea
Gjivai Zechiel has started the 2026-27 season impressively with Feyenoord, catching the attention of Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea. The Dutch midfielder's journey to prominence wasn't immediate. After five years in Feyenoord's academy, he joined the first team in August 2023 at 19 but initially struggled for regular playing time.
By January 2025, Zechiel had only made 11 Eredivisie appearances, prompting Feyenoord to loan him to Sparta Rotterdam, where he had spent six youth years before. This move gave him valuable senior experience, as he scored or assisted three times in 13 matches. His success there earned him a bigger loan to Utrecht, who finished fourth in the Eredivisie in 2025-26, qualifying for the Europa League.
At Utrecht, Zechiel flourished under coach Ron Jans, recording 20 combined goals and assists across 50 games. Jans praised him, saying, "In my eyes, he can grow into a top player. I think he deserves a chance at Feyenoord." With Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking over Feyenoord's management in June, Zechiel got that opportunity and has been hailed as "the future for Dutch football." Both Arsenal and Chelsea are reported to be interested in acquiring him.
Transformation at Utrecht
Jans deployed Zechiel in a more advanced midfield role, allowing him to push forward aggressively. This change turned him from a game manager into an attacking threat. In spring, he netted goals in three consecutive league games against Go Ahead Eagles, PSV, and Telstar, and scored twice for the Netherlands U21s versus Norway. His knack for finding space and clinical finishing forced Feyenoord to reconsider his role.
His earlier development had some setbacks, especially during the 2023-24 season when he clashed with then-U19 coach Robin van Persie. Zechiel admitted to NOS that he was immature and difficult at that time but apologized for his behavior.
Staying at Feyenoord Despite French Interest
When Van Bronckhorst took charge, Zechiel briefly considered moving to Lille, who offered up to €17 million. He felt the transfer might benefit his career but ultimately stayed after Feyenoord rejected the bids. Van Bronckhorst recognized Zechiel's potential and made him a key part of the squad.
In Feyenoord's opening match of the season, Zechiel played the full game and assisted the only goal against Sparta Rotterdam. Van Bronckhorst commented to ESPN, "His mind wasn’t fully with the club at first because he wanted a transfer. But once you see him train and his qualities, it’s clear he must stay here."
Leading Feyenoord's Charge
Zechiel has started all nine Eredivisie matches this season and featured in Champions League games against Barcelona and Como. He has already tallied five league goals and four assists. His brace in a 5-2 win over SC Cambuur helped Feyenoord maintain an unbeaten run and reach the top of the standings.
He was named Eredivisie Player of the Month for August, leading the league with three goals and seven shots on target. Former Ajax player Lasse Schone praised him to ESPN: "He gets into the box more often and has become decisive. Bigger clubs than Lille will come calling if he keeps this up." Zechiel’s confidence shines through moments like his unstoppable strike against Como.
Feyenoord secured Zechiel’s future by extending his contract until 2029. Technical director Devy Rigaux said, "He feels a strong commitment to Feyenoord and is eager to succeed here." Zechiel expressed gratitude for the club's trust and is motivated to progress further.
International Breakthrough
New Dutch coach Xavi included Zechiel in the national squad after observing his performances. Xavi noted, "He has potential, quality, and moves well without the ball. Technically, he’s very good." Zechiel debuted in a Nations League game against Greece, coming off the bench to help the team equalize.
In a later match against Serbia, Zechiel played 33 minutes and excelled as the free man in midfield, completing 22 of 24 passes and making several key contributions. Xavi praised him after the game, saying, "He played a great game and can become really important for the team. He has the personality."
Potential Fit for the Premier League
Zechiel's skill set suggests he could thrive in England's top division soon. Mikel Arteta reportedly values midfielders who are technically skilled and able to resist pressure—traits Zechiel displays. At Arsenal, he'd blend well with players like Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, offering creativity, efficiency, and goal threat.
At Chelsea, Zechiel could complement Moises Caicedo by quickly distributing the ball to attackers like Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, adding clever runs to boost offense.
One concern is his physicality; he reads the game well but sometimes struggles in tackles and ground duels. Gaining strength and adapting to the Premier League’s intensity will be key.
Zechiel looks up to leaders like Denzel Dumfries and Virgil van Dijk and wants to learn from them. His ambition and humility suggest he could become a valuable asset for top clubs. If his progress continues, a bidding battle could erupt in 2027.
