Joao Pedro Signs Long-Term Deal with Chelsea, Closing Door on Barcelona
Barcelona’s striker search has taken another hit. One of the names high on Deco’s list is now locked away in London for the long haul.
Joao Pedro shuts the door on Barça
Joao Pedro, repeatedly linked as a centre-forward option for Barcelona while the club braces for disappointment in their chase of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, is no longer on the market. Chelsea made it official on Saturday: the Brazilian has signed a new contract running until 2034.
It is a statement deal. A decade-long commitment that underlines just how determined Chelsea are to keep hold of a player they see as central to their future.
Joao Pedro only arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025, but he has moved quickly from promising signing to cornerstone. He exploded onto the scene on the biggest stage, scoring in both the semi-final and final of the FIFA Club World Cup to help Chelsea lift the world title.
The impact did not fade once the confetti was cleared.
A season that changed his status
In his first full campaign, the 2025-2026 season, Joao Pedro carried that Club World Cup form straight into domestic and European competition. He finished with 20 goals in all competitions and was voted Player of the Season by Chelsea supporters – a clear verdict from the fanbase on who had become their new hero.
The Brazilian himself made no secret of how he feels about the club after signing his new deal.
“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future,” he said.
The bond goes beyond what happens on the pitch.
“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I joined,” he added, underlining why the idea of a move away was never likely to gain traction.
And he made it clear the ambition inside the dressing room matches the length of his contract.
“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals.”
Big goals, big games, big moments
The numbers are impressive, but the timing of his goals tells the real story.
At the Club World Cup, he struck twice against his former club Fluminense to fire Chelsea into the final. On the biggest night, against Paris Saint-Germain in the showpiece, he scored again to help seal the title. Big pressure, big response.
Back in England, he opened Chelsea’s 2025-2026 league campaign with the first goal of the season away at West Ham United, then delivered the only goal in a tight win at Tottenham Hotspur. Rival grounds, hostile atmospheres, same outcome.
Europe saw the same ruthless streak. Joao Pedro scored twice as Chelsea beat Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, underlining his growing reputation as a forward who delivers when it matters.
For Barcelona, that profile made him an attractive solution in a complicated market. Now, with Joao Pedro tied down until 2034 and Chelsea making their stance crystal clear, Deco’s search for a new No. 9 just became even more demanding.
