Joey Veerman Joins Borussia Dortmund: A Midfield Architect
Borussia Dortmund have landed their man. Joey Veerman is in the door, the deal is permanent, and the club’s midfield rebuild has taken a major step forward.
The Dutch playmaker arrives from PSV, heading straight into the heart of a team that has made no secret of its need for more control and guile in the middle of the pitch. Dortmund wanted a conductor. Veerman has been signed to hold the baton.
A serial winner from Eindhoven
Veerman does not come to the Bundesliga on promise alone. His CV is heavy with recent success. At PSV he stacked up three straight Eredivisie titles in 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26, on top of KNVB Cup triumphs in 2021–22 and 2022–23.
Those years in Eindhoven and his outings in European competition have built a reputation for consistency and calm under pressure. Dortmund are banking on that pedigree translating quickly to the tempo and physical edge of German football.
Dortmund’s midfield reset
The transfer is also a clear response to the gaps that have opened in Edin Terzic’s engine room. Borussia Dortmund’s Managing Director of Sports, Lars Ricken, spelled out the thinking behind the move.
“Joey is a player whose skills will be of enormous help to us. We have deliberately focused our transfer activities this summer on central midfield, because with Pascal Gross and Salih Ozcan, we’ve lost two players there since the start of the year - and we plan to use Emre Can in central defense once he returns to the team.”
That is the context into which Veerman walks: a midfield short on numbers but high on expectations. His passing range, set-piece quality and ability to dictate rhythm are exactly the traits Dortmund have been missing when games tighten and spaces close.
High praise from the hierarchy
Inside the club, the excitement around the signing is obvious. Sporting Director Ole Book did not hold back when assessing what Veerman brings.
“Joey is a truly outstanding soccer player who possesses a great deal of creativity, technical skill, and vision. He has shown at PSV Eindhoven and with the Dutch national team that he can consistently perform at the highest level. We’re excited that he’ll be bringing his talents to our team in the future.”
That blend of creativity and reliability is what Dortmund hope will tilt tight matches in their favour, both in the Bundesliga and across Europe. This is not a depth signing. It is a statement that they intend to control more games, not just chase them.
The road to his first kick in black and yellow
For now, the focus turns to the training ground. Veerman must adjust quickly to a new league, a new dressing room and the different rhythms of the Bundesliga. Pre-season sessions will be his testing ground, the place where he learns the triggers, pressing patterns and combinations that define Dortmund’s play.
Supporters will already be circling potential dates for his debut at Signal Iduna Park, imagining those first clipped passes through the lines in black and yellow. How quickly he nails down a starting role will be one of the main storylines of Dortmund’s early season.
The paperwork is done. The signatures are dry. Dortmund have their new midfield architect — and their season may well be judged on how fast Joey Veerman can turn promise on paper into control on the pitch.
