The call every player dreams of came on Tuesday. In San Jose, where Bay FC are still finding their feet in the NWSL, Keira Barry learned she will be flying home – not just to England, but into the heart of the senior national team.
England Football has named the Congleton-born forward in a 24-player squad for a pair of 2027 World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland, her first-ever senior international call-up and her first for any England side in 2026.
For Barry, it is the moment where promise turns into proof.
From U-23 Plans to Senior Stage
This window was supposed to be another step on the usual pathway. Barry had originally been selected for England’s U-23 squad for April, lined up alongside her Bay FC teammate, defender Anouk Denton. It made sense: Barry has been a regular presence in the youth setup, most recently featuring for the Young Lionesses U-23s in December 2025.
Then her form in California changed the conversation.
The Manchester United product has wasted no time making an impression in her first NWSL season. She came off the bench for her club and league debut on March 14 against Denver Summit FC. Two weeks later, on March 28, she earned her first NWSL start and marked it with her first NWSL goal.
That early impact has pushed her beyond the development track and straight into the plans of Head Coach Sarah Wiegman.
A Place in Wiegman’s 24
Wiegman has named a 24-player group to navigate two significant qualifiers. Spain first, then Iceland. High stakes, high scrutiny.
England host Spain at Wembley Stadium, connected by EE, on Tuesday, April 14. Four days later, they head to Reykjavik to face Iceland on Saturday, April 18 – the 500th game in Lionesses history, a landmark occasion that adds extra weight to every selection.
Barry will walk into that environment as a newcomer, but not as a passenger. Her inclusion underlines the message that form in the NWSL carries real currency back in England, and that the door to the national team remains open to those willing to push through it.
Bay FC’s International Wave
Barry is not the only Bay FC player packing her bags for international duty this month. The expansion club will scatter talent across five federations during the April 7–18 window, a remarkable spread for a team still in its infancy.
- Defender Sydney Collins links up with Canada.
- Center-back Aldana Cometti joins Argentina.
- Anouk Denton stays in the England pathway with the U-23s.
- On the U.S. side, midfielder Claire Hutton heads into camp with the senior United States squad, while forwards Onyeka Gamero and Alex Pfeiffer report to the U.S. U-20s.
- Veteran forward Cristiana Girelli joins Italy, and midfielders Taylor Huff and Jordan Silkowitz are set for action with the U.S. U-23s.
For Bay FC, it is validation of their recruitment strategy. For Barry, it is something more personal.
From Congleton to California, and now to Wembley and Reykjavik, her trajectory has shifted in a matter of weeks. The next time she pulls on an England shirt, it will not be as a Young Lioness.
It will be as a full Lioness, with World Cup qualifying points – and a historic 500th match – on the line.
