Kieran Morrison Joins Sheffield Wednesday on Loan

Sheffield Wednesday have moved to sharpen their attack with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Liverpool winger Kieran Morrison.

The 19-year-old, a right-sided Northern Ireland international, arrives at Hillsborough on the back of a breakout year in Liverpool’s academy and his first steps into senior football.

From Premier League prospect to Hillsborough stage

Morrison made his first-team debut for Liverpool in October, coming on in the Carabao Cup last-16 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield. He featured again off the bench in March as the Reds beat Wolves in the FA Cup, a second small but significant step into Jürgen Klopp’s senior set-up.

His numbers at Under-21 level explain why Wednesday have moved quickly. Manchester-born Morrison hit 15 goals and supplied seven assists for Liverpool’s Under-21s last season, form that earned him a place on the shortlist for the Premier League Two Player of the Year award.

Liverpool tied him down to a new four-year contract in May. A month later, he made his senior international debut for Northern Ireland, coming on in their friendly win over Guinea in June. The trajectory is steep, and Wednesday want to be part of it.

“The rebuild is now”

Speaking to the Owls’ website, Morrison made it clear why he pushed for the move.

"It's a massive club with great history and even better fans. Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it," he said.

"It's a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible.

"I want to show the fans, the gaffer and everyone why the gaffer wanted to sign me and why I belong here."

The winger’s direct running and eye for goal fit the profile of a side intent on climbing again, and his comments underline a player eager to prove he can handle the demands of League One.

High-intensity fit

Owls sporting director Simon Wilson believes Wednesday and Liverpool have found common ground in how they want Morrison to play.

"Kieran is a player with huge potential," Wilson said. "During his time with us, he will benefit from playing in front of huge crowds in a high intensity pressing team that wants to play and run forward, just like he is being asked at Liverpool.

"Equally, we hope to get the value of his quality in his time with us and send him back a better player and a better person.

"It was the shortest player call we have ever had – Kieran's enthusiasm for coming here was extremely strong and he cannot wait to get started."

That enthusiasm could be on show almost immediately. Morrison is available for Thursday’s League One clash at home to Bradford City, and Hillsborough may not have to wait long to see what Liverpool’s latest prospect can bring to a club in the middle of its rebuild.
