Lamine Yamal's Injury Overshadows Barcelona's Narrow Victory

Lamine Yamal’s penalty settled the game. His injury silenced it.

The teenage Spain star won the spot-kick with a burst of footwork that sliced through a tense night at Camp Nou, then buried it himself to give Barcelona a narrow win over Celta. As he struck the ball, though, he hurt himself and crumpled to the turf, turning celebration into concern in an instant.

He stayed down, calling for treatment while his team-mates gathered to applaud the goal. The joy was muted. Yamal was eventually forced off before half-time, replaced by Roony Bardghji, with the stadium left to chew over the sight of their brightest young light limping out of the game that he had just decided.

Pedri's Comments

Pedri, speaking to Movistar, did not hide the urgency of the title race or the worry over his teammate.

“We have to win every game and seal La Liga as soon as possible, it was important to win today,” he said. On Yamal, he added: “I hope (Lamine's injury) is for as few weeks as possible. Tomorrow he'll be tested and we'll see what it is. I wish him the best of luck, and he should stay calm -- he's young and will surely recover well.”

Joao Cancelo also departed injured, another blow on a night that still ended with Barcelona nine points clear of Real Madrid at the top, six matches left and a Clasico looming on May 10. Hansi Flick’s side, in their first outing since being knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid, never quite found their usual attacking rhythm and had to grind.

Celta's Early Threat

Celta were sharp early. Joan Garcia kept Barca level with strong stops from Pablo Duran and Ferran Jutgla as the visitors threatened to spoil the mood. With little to separate the teams, it took Yamal’s spark to crack the game open.

The forward darted into the area, swapped passes with Dani Olmo and tried to glide past Yoel Lago. The defender clipped him, the referee pointed to the spot, and Yamal took responsibility. His low effort beat Ionut Radu, who guessed correctly but could not reach it.

Then came the twist. As he landed, Yamal pulled up, immediately in discomfort. Medical staff rushed on while the rest of the stadium tried to process how a moment of brilliance had ended with their prodigy lying on the grass.

At the same time, a medical emergency in the stands forced a long stoppage. The match was delayed for more than 15 minutes, and when play finally resumed with Celta’s kick-off, Yamal was gone, Bardghji already on in his place.

Barcelona, already missing their penalty hero and with Cancelo also off, laboured through the second half. They rarely carved Celta open and thought they had finally killed the tension when Ferran Torres volleyed in from Pedri’s pass. The relief was brief. A marginal offside call ruled it out and kept nerves fraying.

Former Barca defender Marcos Alonso hammered a late free-kick into the wall, but Celta could not find an equaliser. The hosts clung on to three points that could prove decisive in the title race, even as they walked away counting the physical cost.

For Celta, the defeat left them seventh, still chasing European football next season. “We were very good in the first half, we had chances and they didn't have so many... but individual talent made the difference,” said Jutgla. “La Liga is very competitive and we will fight until the end.”

Barcelona will say the same. The question now is whether they will have Yamal and Cancelo fit to finish that fight.
