Liverpool Aims for Strong Performance Against Bournemouth

Liverpool hit the south coast this afternoon looking for a clean launch into the long international break – and Andoni Iraola walks straight back into familiar territory.

The Vitality Stadium is where he outfoxed his current employers last season, engineering a 3-2 win over Liverpool while in the Bournemouth dugout. Now he returns as Reds head coach, charged with making sure history does not repeat itself.

Iraola goes strong on his old patch

There’s no late drama on the fitness front for Liverpool. The picture is unchanged: long-term absentees Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain out, while Federico Chiesa edges closer to joining full training but isn’t ready yet.

So Iraola has gone with a full-blooded Premier League XI, restoring many of the big names who sat out the Carabao Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur in midweek.

Alisson Becker comes straight back in after Giorgi Mamardashvili’s eventful cup display. In front of him, the first-choice centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet is reunited, with Ronald Araujo shunted across to right-back. On the left, Milos Kerkez keeps his place after holding the shirt in the cup.

The midfield has a familiar look again. Dominik Szoboszlai returns to join Alexis Mac Allister, while Florian Wirtz comes back into the side, taking the spot occupied by James McConnell in midweek.

Up front, Iraola twists the dial. Cody Gakpo keeps his place after the Spurs win, but Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola are both recalled, with youngsters Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas dropping to the bench.

Gomez on the brink of a milestone

One sub to watch: Joe Gomez. If he steps onto the pitch, he reaches 300 club career appearances – a landmark that underlines how long he’s been part of the furniture despite still being in his mid-20s.

There’s symmetry to the occasion. Gomez’s first Anfield outing for Liverpool came against Bournemouth back in their debut Premier League season 11 years ago. Now he could mark a major milestone while the Reds visit the same opponents, in a stadium loaded with subplots for his manager.

Alongside Gomez on the bench, Iraola has attacking options in Victor Munoz, plus Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas if the game opens up. Ryan Gravenberch and Nyoni offer different midfield profiles if Liverpool need to wrest control or inject energy late on.
