Liverpool Targets Lille's Matias Fernandez-Pardo Amid Newcastle Interest
Liverpool have moved into the conversation for Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, threatening to derail Newcastle United’s push for the Belgian international late in the window.
A well-placed source on X (formerly Twitter) claims Liverpool made direct contact on Wednesday, sounding out the possibility of a deal as the club’s search for attacking reinforcements drags into the final stretch of the summer.
Newcastle have long been credited with strong interest in Fernandez-Pardo and are understood to see the 21-year-old as a key wide addition. Now they may have company.
Not just a touchline winger
This isn’t a routine “wide option” link for Liverpool. Fernandez-Pardo offers more than chalk-on-the-boots width.
His senior career with Gent and Lille shows a player comfortable operating both out wide and in central attacking areas, drifting inside to influence play rather than simply hugging the flank. That positional flexibility is precisely the sort of profile Liverpool have been scouring the market for.
With the club set to lean heavily on Hugo Ekitike through much of the 2026/27 campaign, extra cover in and around the No. 9 role is no luxury. It’s a necessity. A forward who can start wide, step into central pockets and ease the load on the main striker suddenly looks very attractive.
Fernandez-Pardo ticks that box.
Creator more than killer
There is a caveat. The data doesn’t paint Fernandez-Pardo as a cold-blooded finisher in the mould of an Alexander Isak.
His Ligue 1 numbers for Lille in 2025/26 point to a player who contributes heavily to build-up and chance creation rather than one who guarantees a haul of goals on his own. For a club like Newcastle, pairing that profile with a penalty-box predator such as Isak makes obvious sense: let the Belgian feed the Swede.
For Liverpool, the equation is slightly different. If the plan is to use him predominantly on the left, the recruitment team must be convinced he can also deliver on the right. The squad already carries left-sided threats; another specialist there only works if he can flip flanks without losing impact.
Otherwise, the move jars with ongoing efforts to secure Bradley Barcola from PSG, a deal that has loomed large over Liverpool’s wide-forward strategy all summer.
A late-window dilemma
So the question hangs over Anfield: is Fernandez-Pardo being viewed as a versatile forward who can protect the middle and both wings, or as a more traditional left-sided option?
If it’s the latter, Liverpool’s late intervention in a chase long associated with Newcastle would raise eyebrows. If it’s the former, this could be the kind of opportunistic, multi-role signing that defines a season.
