Manchester City Faces Severe Premier League Sanctions Threatening Relegation
Manchester City could be staring down a grim future if their appeal against financial breach allegations fails. The club was found guilty of 114 breaches spanning from 2009 to 2018, triggering a prolonged legal dispute with the Premier League since 2023.
Appeal Timeline and Possible Outcomes
The appeal process is currently active, with a ruling expected by December 25. A final decision from the commission might follow in mid-January. Potential punishments include point deductions, transfer restrictions, or even expulsion from the Premier League.
While expulsion seems unlikely, insiders reveal that a hefty points deduction could effectively ensure Manchester City's relegation to the EFL Championship. Dropping the club directly into League Two would create chaos between the Premier League and the EFL, making it an improbable scenario.
Inside Sources on Punishments
According to Oliver Holt’s sources, the most probable penalty will involve a severe points deduction combined with a substantial fine. This would likely keep the team in the Championship for at least one season, allowing them time to restructure sustainably. The EFL may not be required to accept this punishment but is expected to cooperate.
European Competition Ban Rumors
Adding to the club’s troubles, Colombian journalist Cesar Augusto Londono reported that UEFA might impose a ban from all European tournaments lasting 7 to 10 years if the guilty verdict stands. This would exclude Manchester City from the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
"UEFA is reportedly close to announcing that, if Manchester City is found guilty following its appeal, it will be expelled from all European competitions for a period of 7 to 10 years," Londono stated.
If relegated and remaining in the Championship for another year, it could take around three years before the club could compete for European qualification again. A seven to ten-year ban would extend that absence considerably. Questions arise about which players would stay without a chance to play in Europe's elite competitions.
