Manchester United Faces Sabah in Historic Champions League Return at Old Trafford
On Thursday evening, Manchester United will welcome Sabah to Old Trafford, marking the return of the Champions League to their home ground for the first time since 2023. This encounter holds special significance as the two clubs have never crossed paths before.

Sabah, founded only in 2017 and representing Azerbaijan, are newcomers to this stage against the Red Devils. The fixture is a landmark event, being the first-ever meeting between a Premier League giant and an Azerbaijani team.
Although Qarabağ FK has been the Azerbaijani club with the most European competition experience, featuring regularly in the Champions League and reaching knockout stages last season, Sabah's appearance here marks their debut beyond qualifying rounds. Their previous European outings have been limited to the Conference and Europa League competitions.

Since Manchester United last played in the Champions League in December 2023, many players on the squad have yet to experience the tournament. Key attacker Bryan Mbeumo, goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and defender Leny Yoro have all yet to compete in Europe’s top club competition. Manager Michael Carrick brings a winning history from his playing days, having secured the Champions League trophy in 2008 and appearing in two finals afterward. Although his managerial experience in European contests is limited, he boasts a 100% record from his single match as caretaker manager in 2021, leading United to a 2-0 away victory over Villarreal.
This game will also be Carrick’s first European match managing Manchester United at Old Trafford, adding extra weight to the occasion.
