Nico O'Reilly Named PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year

Nico O'Reilly has been hailed as a “shining example” after the Manchester City full-back was named PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old collected the award at Manchester’s Opera House, capping a breakthrough season in which he delivered on the biggest stages. He scored twice in last season’s Carabao Cup final, turning the showpiece into his own platform, and added an FA Cup winner’s medal to a rapidly growing collection. On the international stage, he also helped England secure third place at the World Cup.

His latest honour extends a remarkable streak for City’s production line. Five of the past six winners of the PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year award have come through the club’s academy, with O'Reilly now joining Phil Foden (twice), Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers on an increasingly crowded honours board.

“Seeing Nico win the award was an incredibly proud moment for everyone connected to our academy,” said City’s academy director Thomas Krucken, reflecting on a journey that began more than a decade ago.

“His success is testament to the hard work of the academy staff and coaches who guided him on his journey from our Under-9s all the way towards senior football.

“Nico is an inspiration to everyone at the academy. He is a shining example of how to approach the world of football and be successful. We are all really proud of him and want to send our best wishes to him and his family.

“Having five of the past six winners of the PFA Young Player of the Year award from our academy is an extraordinary achievement for us.”

For City’s youth system, O’Reilly is the latest proof that the pathway from Under-9s to major finals is not just a sales pitch. It is becoming the norm.
