Pio Esposito Stays at Inter Milan Despite Manchester United Interest
Manchester United have been told “no” in the clearest possible terms. Pio Esposito, the Inter Milan forward they tracked and tested with a serious move, is staying put and preparing to sign a new contract at San Siro.
United’s recruitment team had identified the 21-year-old as one of the most exciting young No.9 profiles in Europe. They watched him closely for Italy in games against Luxembourg and Greece, convinced he “possesses the attributes to develop into a top-level centre-forward”. Their interest hardened into what has been described in Italy as an “attack” for his signature.
Inter didn’t blink.
Inter shut the door
Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà detailed how the Nerazzurri responded to United’s push: they simply refused to engage. Inter, he wrote, “resisted every kind of attack for Pio Esposito, especially Manchester United who had their eye on the 2005-born striker. But there was no room for manoeuvre; no amount of money would have been enough to break down the Nerazzurri’s resistance.”
That resistance has a simple explanation. Esposito is not just another promising forward on their books. He is seen internally as a cornerstone of the club’s future.
Last season, the Italy international underlined that belief on the pitch: 10 goals and six assists in 48 appearances across all competitions. Not explosive numbers, but significant for a young striker learning his trade at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs, and important enough to cement his status in Simone Inzaghi’s plans.
Inter chairman and CEO Giuseppe Marotta has long been a believer. Back in November 2025, speaking to FCInter1908, he described Esposito as “something of a predestined talent for several years” – a rare public endorsement from a man not prone to hyperbole.
Renewal, not relocation
With United circling, this summer could have been a crossroads. Instead, it has become a confirmation of where Esposito sees his future.
Pedullà reports that Inter are closing in on a renewal package worth a base of around €3.5 million plus bonuses. Those figures were first floated a month ago and, crucially, there was no panic on either side. Inter knew the player’s stance. Esposito, according to the same report, has always given “priority to Inter”, allowing negotiations to progress on the club’s terms despite Premier League interest.
The message from Milan is clear: the new deal is coming, and it will arrive on the back of a firm rejection of United’s advances.
United’s striker puzzle continues
For Manchester United, this is another twist in a summer-long search for the right partner – and rival – for Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko is locked in as the primary centre-forward, but the club want another frontman to deepen the attacking options and ease the burden across a long season. Matheus Cunha can operate as a No.9, yet he is more of a hybrid attacker than a penalty-box specialist. Joshua Zirkzee offers a different profile again, drifting wide and dropping deep, and his own future at Old Trafford is uncertain with Juventus pushing hard for the Netherlands international.
United have already turned down one proposal, rejecting the chance to sign Liam Delap from Chelsea, as revealed by TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey. Esposito, by contrast, was a player they were prepared to move decisively for.
The answer, though, has been definitive. Inter are keeping their “predestined” striker, and Esposito is choosing the Curva Nord over the Stretford End.
United will move on to the next name. Inter, with a prized No.9 tied down and a Premier League giant repelled, will feel their future just got a little more secure.
