French Authorities Confirm PSG vs Barcelona Match Will Proceed Despite Paris Unrest

The UEFA Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona faces uncertainty as protests grip Paris. Recent riots have caused over 1,800 arrests, prompting partial curfews across parts of the city amid some of France's worst street violence in years.

Scheduled for Tuesday night at Parc des Princes, the clash marks the third matchweek of the Champions League. Calls to postpone the fixture have surfaced amid ongoing social tensions in Paris.

French Police Request Postponement Citing Safety Concerns

A police union representative reportedly urged for the game to be delayed due to fears of further riots, according to French news outlet AlertesInfos. This fixture is considered one of the biggest in this season’s Champions League, featuring two strong contenders for the European title.

  • PSG lead their group, unbeaten so far with a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava and a 4-2 victory away at Manchester City.
  • Barcelona, managed by Hansi Flick, are second in the group after convincing wins against Feyenoord (5-1) and Galatasaray (4-1).
  • Kickoff is set for 8PM GMT, marking PSG’s first home game in Paris in nine days.

The unrest began in September and has escalated, drawing government attention and intervention.

French Interior Minister Confirms Match Will Go Ahead

Laurent Nunez, France’s Interior Minister, addressed concerns in an interview with Onze Mondial. He stated, "There are no plans to postpone the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, nor any other Champions League match. The progress of the matches is not in doubt."

At his pre-match press conference, PSG coach Luis Enrique expressed hope that the game would proceed smoothly. He remarked, "I am not the person who should be talking about it. I'm here to talk about football. Obviously, we don't like this kind of violence, but that's how society evolves. I can only focus on football. I hope that the match will go well."

Previous Postponement Talks in Football Due to Safety Issues

This isn't the first occasion this year where safety concerns sparked postponement discussions. Prior to Mexico and England’s World Cup Round of 16 game, FIFA considered adjusting kick-off times because of weather and overcrowding risks after street celebrations in Mexico City resulted in four fan fatalities.
