Rio Ngumoha Edges Closer to New Liverpool Contract
Arsenal have been circling. Liverpool look ready to slam the door.
With the Premier League champions scouring the market for a left winger for 2027 after failed moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior, Rio Ngumoha quickly rose towards the top of their wishlist. No direct replacement arrived for Gabriel Martinelli in the summer, and the gap in Mikel Arteta’s squad has kept the rumour mill spinning.
Yet all the noise around Ngumoha now points in one direction: Anfield.
Liverpool move to lock down their next star
TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract. The framework is there; the finer details are being thrashed out.
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that Liverpool expect no major obstacles as talks move towards a full, binding deal. Inside the club, there is confidence. On the player’s side, there is contentment.
“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha,” O’Rourke explained, adding that the 18-year-old is happy on Merseyside and “set to get regular starts this season.” That pathway, clearly laid out and backed up with minutes, has become a decisive factor.
When a teenager of this profile emerges, interest is inevitable. Liverpool know it. Arsenal know it. Europe’s elite know it. But the message from Anfield has been unwavering: Rio Ngumoha is their future, and they intend to build around him.
Arsenal left watching from a distance
For Arsenal, this is familiar frustration.
David Ornstein has already hinted that he “could see something happening” in January as the club explore options out wide. Yet with Ngumoha buying into Liverpool’s vision and edging towards a long-term commitment, the champions look set to miss out on another left-sided target.
The London club reshaped their attack in the last window, replacing Leandro Trossard with Christos Tzolis, then watching Martinelli depart without bringing in a like-for-like successor. The plan, for now, is to trust what they have and remain alert to future opportunities.
Ngumoha would have been one of those. Instead, Arsenal may have to bide their time and hope the landscape shifts years down the line.
Romano: Liverpool never even opened the door
Fabrizio Romano has echoed the sense that this story is heading only one way.
He revealed that, during the summer, rumours around Bayern Munich and other clubs never moved the needle inside Liverpool. “The player is not leaving, the player is not for sale and Liverpool trust Rio. Rio is Liverpool’s future,” was the internal line.
There were admirers, as you would expect for one of the most highly regarded young wingers in Europe. There were no negotiations. No softening of Liverpool’s stance. No hint that they would cash in.
Now, as Arsenal’s name enters the conversation, Romano’s position remains the same: strong interest exists, but Liverpool are driving towards a new contract and have no intention of selling.
“Liverpool want to keep the boy and Liverpool are discussing a new contract with Rio,” he said, stressing that talks are active and detailed. Guarantees, game time, financial terms, long-term role – every point has to land just right for both sides.
The work is ongoing. The direction of travel feels clear.
A battle delayed, not denied?
Arsenal’s recruitment team will not walk away from a talent like Ngumoha. Romano has already suggested that if a chance arises in 2027, 2028 or beyond, the champions would be among the clubs ready to move – joined, almost certainly, by heavyweight interest from abroad.
For now, though, this is Liverpool’s fight to win, and they look close to landing the decisive blow.
