Savinho Joins Tottenham for £75 Million from Manchester City
Tottenham have smashed through the £300 million barrier in this transfer window, landing Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City for a reported initial £75 million on Tuesday.
It is a huge bet on a player who never quite cracked the City code.
From City fringe to Spurs centrepiece
Savinho, 22, arrives in north London after two seasons on the fringes at the Etihad, where he struggled to secure a regular starting place. His numbers in England underline that battle: seven goals in 84 appearances as City finished both of Pep Guardiola’s final two campaigns without Premier League or Champions League glory.
Yet Tottenham are not buying the player he has been at City. They are paying for the one who lit up Girona.
Before his move to Manchester, Savinho exploded during a loan spell at Girona, another club in the City Football Group network, earning his £30 million transfer from Troyes in 2024 and a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young wide forwards. That version of Savinho – direct, fearless, devastating in transition – is the one Spurs believe they are getting.
"It's taken a while but I'm very happy to be here," he said in a club statement, his words carrying the sense of a fresh start. "It's a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.
"As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team."
De Zerbi’s rebuild goes big
Tottenham’s move for Savinho is the latest swing in Roberto De Zerbi’s aggressive overhaul of a squad that flirted with disaster last season. Spurs only just escaped relegation from the Premier League, avoiding a first drop into the second tier for 49 years, before the Italian’s arrival steadied the ship at the end of the campaign.
That late surge bought De Zerbi time and, crucially, backing.
The spending has been relentless. Savinho joins big-money signings Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have arrived on free transfers to deepen and harden the squad.
For all that outlay, the new era began with a jolt. A 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend cut through the summer optimism and underlined how much work remains.
De Zerbi, though, is clear about what Savinho is supposed to bring.
"Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity," the Italian said.
"We're very pleased to have him with us, and I'm looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team."
High stakes, high ceiling
The fee underlines the scale of Tottenham’s gamble. City are set to bank an initial £75 million and could receive up to an extra £10 million in add-ons if various clauses are met. For a player who never became a mainstay under Guardiola, it is remarkable business for the champions – and a statement of intent from Spurs.
Savinho’s path to Tottenham has followed the familiar City Football Group route. He joined City from Troyes, one of the CFG clubs, in 2024. His breakout at Girona made him a hot property, but that spark dimmed in Manchester, where competition for attacking places is ruthless and patience is thin.
Now he walks into a very different environment: a club desperate for attacking thrust, a manager who encourages risk, and a fanbase hungry for something – or someone – to drag them away from the memory of a relegation battle.
More business to come
The traffic between Manchester and north London may not stop with Savinho. Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush is also expected to leave City for Spurs before the window closes next week, with talks between the clubs ongoing and further deals anticipated.
Tottenham’s rebuild under De Zerbi has already been bold, expensive and unforgiving. Savinho arrives as the headline act of a frantic summer, carrying the weight of a price tag and the promise of a second chance.
If he becomes the Girona version of himself again, Spurs may have found the winger to electrify their new era. If he doesn’t, this window’s £300 million outlay will look less like ambition and more like a roll of the dice in a club that cannot afford to miss.
