UEFA Introduces Swiss Format for European Qualifiers Starting 2028

International football is on the brink of a significant change. UEFA is set to approve the Swiss system format during a meeting in Thessaloniki. This format, already used in the club-level Champions League, will be applied to the Nations League and qualifiers for the World Cup and European Championships starting from 2028, according to confirmation by AS.

A New League Structure with 36 Teams

The existing group stage format will be replaced by a single league featuring 36 national teams. Each team will play six matches—half at home and half away—against opponents of varying strength levels. The aim is to reduce one-sided games and boost the appeal and value of broadcasting rights.

Changes in Scheduling and Venues

Alongside this, FIFA plans to introduce double international windows, allowing each national team to play four matches within a 15-day period. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Camp Nou will host the 2029 Champions League final.
