UFC Vegas 124 Features New Heavyweight Main Event

Following Sean Brady’s injury withdrawal from his scheduled fight against Gabriel Bonfim, UFC Vegas 124 has secured a fresh main event for November 7. The heavyweight bout now features Waldo Cortes-Acosta facing off against Johnny Walker. This matchup was confirmed by multiple sources to Heavy.com after Brazilian MMA journalist Laerte Viana first reported it.

Rankings and Background

Cortes-Acosta currently holds the number six spot in the UFC Media rankings and is eighth in the UFC Meta rankings. Walker is ranked twelfth in the Meta rankings. Despite the short notice, Cortes-Acosta understands that a loss is not an option as he takes on Walker.

Cortes-Acosta's UFC Journey

The Dominican fighter entered the UFC in 2022 through the Contender Series and was once viewed as a future top-10 heavyweight. After an early setback against Marcos Rogério de Lima by unanimous decision, his momentum slowed. However, he rebounded with five consecutive wins over fighters like Serghei Spivac and Ryan Spann, earning a match against Sergei Pavlovich. Pavlovich defeated him by unanimous decision last August.

After that, Cortes-Acosta went on a finishing run, stopping Ante Delija, Shamil Gaziev, and Derrick Lewis within just 90 days. This earned him a shot at top contender Alexander Volkov earlier this year, but Volkov managed to control the fight and won after three rounds. More recently, Cortes-Acosta lost to Curtis Blaydes in a performance many found underwhelming. He will be aiming to end a two-fight losing streak against Walker.

Johnny Walker’s Move to Heavyweight

Walker steps into the heavyweight division for only his second fight at this weight class. Known previously as a light-heavyweight, he competed there from 2018 until 2026. Early in his UFC career, Walker was hailed as a rising star and a potential challenger to Jon Jones, winning his first three UFC fights in the opening round. But then he hit a rough patch, winning just one of his next five bouts.

Between 2022 and 2023, Walker bounced back with a three-fight winning streak, putting himself back in title contention. However, knockout losses to Magomed Ankalaev and Volkan Oezdemir in 2024 derailed his momentum. After a comeback win over Zhang Mingyang last year, he announced plans to move up to heavyweight.

Despite those plans, Walker fought Dominick Reyes at light-heavyweight, losing by split decision in a fight that many considered uneventful. He finally moved to heavyweight and recently knocked out Mick Parkin in the first round. Now, with a win over Cortes-Acosta, Walker could break into the top 8 of the heavyweight division.
