Vincent Kompany Collapses After Training Session

Vincent Kompany was back on the grass. Then, suddenly, he wasn’t.

Bayern Munich’s 40-year-old head coach was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing following a training session, the club confirmed, jolting a team and a fanbase that had only just watched him marshal a high-intensity Champions League draw against Arsenal from the touchline.

Kompany had been observing the session when the incident occurred at Bayern’s training base. Medical staff reacted immediately before he was transported to hospital, where he will now undergo what the club called “comprehensive examinations” and remain under medical care.

In his absence, the coaching staff will assume control of training and match operations. The message from the hierarchy was clear: football can wait.

“Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority,” said sporting director Max Eberl. “We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly. Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs.”

Those words carry extra weight given the backdrop of the week. Kompany had already been diagnosed with a viral infection, which ruled him out of a training session and a press conference on Tuesday. Even so, he returned to the dugout on Wednesday night, driving Bayern through a breathless 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena.

After that match, he admitted he had tried to push through his illness, ignoring what his body was telling him. Two days later, the cost of that decision appeared in stark, worrying fashion.

For Bayern, leaders of the Bundesliga and still navigating a demanding schedule on multiple fronts, the timing is as delicate as it is sobering. The team are due to travel to Freiburg on Sunday for a league fixture, with the coaching staff now entrusted with preparation and in-game decisions while Kompany remains under observation.

The club repeated that arrangement in its statement, underlining that training and match-related duties will be handled internally until the head coach is fit to return.

Bayern have spent this season projecting control and authority on the pitch. For the moment, all that matters is that their manager regains the same off it.
