While Arsenal stepped back, Sunderland and Crystal Palace fought hard to land Fofana. Sunderland emerged victorious after offering a higher commission to his representatives, signing him on a five-year deal. This capture thrilled Sunderland’s hierarchy, given the player was once linked with clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea. The signing is viewed as a major success for the Wearside club, adding a highly regarded talent from Ligue 1.

"Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League. He is a player with huge potential and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper," said Florent Ghisolfi during Fofana's unveiling.
