Yves Bissouma Joins Ajax for Fresh Start in Amsterdam
Ajax have ended weeks of speculation by confirming the signing of Yves Bissouma, handing the midfielder a fresh start in Amsterdam after his Premier League exit.
The Mali international, released by Tottenham at the end of last season, has signed a contract at the Johan Cruyff ArenA running until June 30, 2027. The deal takes effect immediately and gives the 28-year-old a clear runway to rebuild his reputation and rhythm in the Eredivisie.
From Spurs struggles to Amsterdam reset
Bissouma arrives in the Netherlands on the back of a difficult final year in North London. He featured just 11 times for Spurs last season, never fully convincing the coaching staff that he could be a consistent, reliable option in midfield.
His spell in England carried baggage. Disciplinary issues repeatedly cut across his on-field ambitions, most notably a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. The incident became a defining reference point in his time at Tottenham, a shadow he now clearly wants to leave behind.
Ajax, though, see opportunity where others saw risk. They have moved for an experienced, battle-tested midfielder without paying a transfer fee, a calculated play to inject steel and personality into the heart of their side.
“I’m a winner”
Bissouma’s tone on arrival is anything but tentative. The former Brighton midfielder spoke with conviction about what this move means.
“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, underlining both the stature of his new home and his desire to be more than just a squad piece.
The move did not catch him off guard. He had been sold on Ajax long before pen met paper.
“Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”
The message is clear: this is not a short-term rescue act, but a role within a broader rebuild.
Bissouma’s own ambitions align with that vision. “I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he stated, setting his standards high from day one.
Leader among the next generation
Ajax’s identity has long been tied to youth development, but the club knows young talent needs experienced voices around it. Bissouma is stepping into that space as well.
“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football,” he said of the club’s younger players. “Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything.”
For a dressing room often populated by emerging prospects, that kind of presence can be as valuable as any tackle or interception.
Cruijff: a long-term target, at the right price
Technical Director Jordi Cruijff underlined that this was no last-minute swoop. Ajax had been tracking Bissouma’s situation for months and moved decisively once the conditions aligned.
“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax,” Cruijff said. “We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible.”
Versatility, experience, no transfer fee and a point to prove: Ajax have rolled the dice on a midfielder who once dominated Premier League midfields at Brighton.
