Roger Federer Clarified His Comments on Stan Wawrinka After a Controversial Davis Cup Moment
Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, two of Switzerland's most decorated tennis players, once found themselves in the middle of a Davis Cup controversy. Together, they hold a combined total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles and have been key figures for Swiss tennis.
Aside from their individual success, the pair teamed up to win doubles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and played a crucial role in Switzerland's first-ever Davis Cup triumph in 2014.
The 2012 Davis Cup Loss and Misunderstood Remarks
Switzerland hosted the USA in 2012, facing the daunting challenge of playing against the 32-time Davis Cup champions on home ground in Fribourg. Despite the home advantage, the Swiss team suffered a 5-0 defeat.
Wawrinka lost a tough five-set match to Mardy Fish, while Federer fell in four sets to John Isner. Their doubles partnership was also defeated by Fish and Mike Bryan, sealing the USA's victory.
After the loss, Federer was quoted saying, "I played well enough in doubles, but Stanislas not so much," and added that Wawrinka "didn't have his best match in singles." He expressed regret that their defeat prevented them from putting pressure on the US team.
Federer later clarified that these statements were mistranslated. At the Rotterdam tournament following the Davis Cup tie, he addressed the media:
"I had some time to recover and handle the press. It was completely misunderstood as me blaming Stan. That’s never what I intended. It was just an unlucky weekend with many factors involved. The Americans played really well. I've talked with the captain and Stan multiple times to clear up any misunderstandings. The press created something out of nothing."
Rebuilding Team Spirit and Davis Cup Victory in 2014
The misunderstanding did not damage the bond between Federer and Wawrinka. In fact, two years later, they led Switzerland to a historic win against France in the 2014 Davis Cup final held in Lille.
Federer secured the winning point against Richard Gasquet but was quick to praise Wawrinka during the post-match press conference:
"Stan set us up perfectly for Sunday. It’s been one of our best weeks as a team, with everyone working well together. Many team members have been here for almost a decade, so we know each other inside out. Winning this trophy means a lot to all of us."
Wawrinka returned the admiration, saying:
"It’s an incredible feeling, the best one. Watching such a fantastic player like Roger performing so well is amazing. I was ready for the last match after warming up, even though I watched the start from the locker room. Roger was outstanding today, dominating Richard. We’re all enjoying this moment."
Switzerland's Davis Cup Journey in 2014
- First Round: Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2
- Quarter-final: Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2
- Semi-final: Switzerland defeated Italy 3-2
- Final: Switzerland defeated France 3-1
Since their 2014 victory, Switzerland has struggled to reach the same heights in the Davis Cup, failing to make it past the early rounds in the following 12 years.
